How to Start Journaling: What to Write in Your Journal

Have you just bought a journal and have no idea what to do with it? Is the journal you purchased a few weeks ago still empty on your desk?  I know, it happens. Sometimes you have entirely no idea what to do with it. Fortunately, this post will give you some creative ideas about what to do with your new journal.

Journal prompts- journal prompts are an excellent way to jumpstart a regular journaling habit. A journal prompt is usually a question that makes you think and reflect on your life as you write down the answers. They are a good way of getting to know yourself and starting a good journaling habit. Journal prompts can be found online or in guided journals. Some examples of journal prompts are as follows:

What are the words that describe you best?

What are your priorities in life?

Daily journaling- a quick way of filling in your journals is by writing down your everyday experiences. Write about the ‘highlight’ and the ‘lowlight’ of your day. This is a good way of acknowledging your daily experiences and being aware of your life and the changes happening in your life. Joan Didion, an American writer once said ‘I don’t know what I think until I write it down.’ Writing about our daily experiences may help us to process what is currently going on in our lives.

Writing therapy- you can use your journal to heal your emotional wounds. Use your journal to unpack your hurt. Write about your past, your traumas, your problems and so much more. It is your journal, after all, pour your heart out. It is like having a therapy session where you spell out your problems to yourself.

Write down your hopes and dreams- for the dreamers, this is how you can use your journal. Write down your future plans, your dreams, your hopes, and what you’re looking forward to. Sometimes writing about the future gives us hope because writing our dreams is a small step towards it becoming a reality.

Stories and creative ideas- tap into your creative side and write down stories, scripts, songs, poems, doodles, comics, and many more creative and imaginative things that you can put down in your journal. An empty journal is a world of endless potential.

Habit tracking- use your journal to track things in your life, for example, habits. If you are trying to develop a new habit, you can track your progress every day in your journal. Journeys can also be tracked. For example, if you are on a fitness journey, you can use your journal to help you track your progress.

There are many more ways to use a journal. More than I can fit in one post because a journal is like an empty, personal ‘canvas’. You can write, draw, color, and paint whatever you want on it. Personalize it, and make it yours. Journaling is something you can never go wrong with. In addition to all this, journaling is a good activity to calm your mind from all the day’s activities. Pat Conroy, an American author, said ‘Writing is the only way I have to explain my own life to myself’, and I couldn’t agree more.
